Kaiser is typically in-network coverage and does not refer to independent acupuncturists.

  • Our practice is out-of-network on all insurance plans. There are IN and out-of-network benefits on a patient's benefit coverage, depending on how the provider is set up with the insurance carrier and what benefit coverage on the patient policy the claim on file will process. We can verify one’s insurance but sometimes a primary care doctor needs to refer you to an acupuncturist before your appointment. It’s best to speak with your insurance provider to check.

  • Unfortunately, Medicare lists acupuncturists as ineligible providers. This may change in the future, but as of now, it is Medicare’s policy.

To bill Medicare, an MD needs to write a referral for acupuncture, which must either be administered by an MD or by an acupuncturist under the supervision of the MD, with the MD signing off on all chart notes as the billing provider. Outside of these conditions, acupuncturists cannot bill Medicare. An initial referral is good for 12 visits to an acupuncturist in an MD’s office or administered by an MD; after those visits are up, they must return to the original MD for re-assessment, if improvement is noted they can be approved for another 8 visits.
